Twister

Ready to see the cows fly again? Twister is about to return, in fact get ready for Twisters. After several attempts over the past few years, the 1996 cult film, centered around a terrifying tornado, will return with a new story. The project will be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, which has teamed up with Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., which will finance the production together. There is already a script written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Overlord) and a director had already been identified, namely Joseph Kosinski, fresh from the extraordinary recent success of Top Gun: Maverick: now, however, given his numerous commitments, seems to have pulled out and a new director must be found.

Several options are currently being evaluated, including Dan Trachtenberg (who has already denied any involvement on Twitter), Bumblebee's Travis Knight and the couple Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi from the extraordinary documentary Free Solo. Little is currently known about the plot but several sources report that the intention is to bring back Helen Hunt, one of the protagonists of the original film, in the cast, focusing however on the daughter she had with Bill Paxton, her colleague in the first film who however disappeared. in February 2017. The plot should start from the fact that the girl took from her parents the passion for hunting tornadoes, obviously finding herself having to face anomalous and uncontrollable atmospheric phenomena.

Twister was one of the most iconic and most successful films of the nineties: on its release 26 years ago it swept away the competition at the box office, raising $ 494 million worldwide. The relevance of the original chapter, which was written by the legendary Michael Crichton (the writer and screenwriter of Jurassic Park and E.R.), was such as to inspire an eponymous attraction in the Universal amusement parks. Obviously, if at the time the out of control tornadoes could be considered as an almost science fiction anomaly, today climate change and environmental problems are urgently topical and certainly the new Twister will address the issue from this point of view. The hope is to start production in spring 2023.
