The Last of Us Part 2: Clues to Battle Royale mode surfaced

The Last of Us Part 2

Rumors have been circulating for a long time about a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2. Naughty Dog has recently indicated that something is on the way - but the exact details have not yet been revealed. Now a dataminer has made a discovery in the game data of the title. Accordingly, the team could work on a battle royale mode for The Last of Us Part 2. Among other things, a large playing card was found, which you can take a closer look at in the video from Dataminer Speclizer.

As is also the case with Call of Duty, the supposed battle royale map is assembled from many smaller multiplayer maps. Several locations that are comparable to the locations from the main game were also found - including the motel, the harbor or a gas station. Even if relevant things were discovered in the game data, it is not yet certain what content the multiplayer of The Last of Us Part 2 will offer in the end.

At the moment it looks like this will be a standalone project that can be purchased independently of the main game. On September 26th, Naughty Dog will celebrate the annual The Last of Us Day again - fans may expect new information about multiplayer during this period. At the same time, the developer studio is also said to be working on a PS5 remake of the original from 2013. The title is to be revised with the successor's engine. According to a report at the time, Naughty Dog wants to use the power of the PS5 and not just provide a simple port from The Last of Us.

The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer assets have been found in the game code

The Last of Us Part II was meant to ship with a new version of the multiplayer Factions mode that came with the first game but it was cut from the release. Job listings have revealed that The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer portions, aka Factions V2 or whatever it ends up being called, will now be a standalone game.

However, dataminers have found assets from the old version of Factions have been left in the version of The Last of Us Part II that shipped to players. These include a map which seems to be very large, much bigger than the maps from the original version of Factions. Could this be an indication that Factions V2 might include a Battle Royale mode?

The map seems to include locations found in the single player game. The Motel, the port of Camillito, and a Gas Station all feature on the map.

The mining has also revealed a ‘Listening Device’, so perhaps you would need that to locate enemies in the game, and a dog collar has also been found. This may be an indication that those pesky dogs that chased you around the main game could be used in the multiplayer. The third object is labelled ‘Handheld-TV’, it’s purpose is unclear but perhaps you could link up to CCTV cameras and spy on your enemy.

The Speclizer channel also uncovered armour packs but was unable to decode them. One of these does reference Ellie so she may be played in Factions V2. Footage of the new version of Factions leaked in August last year but all the videos have have been taken down by Sony.

Naughty Dog made the following statement to fans when The Last of Us Part II was revealed,

We wanted to address multiplayer in The Last of Us Part 2. As we’ve stated, the single player campaign is far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken. Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us Part 1, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us Part 2 would not include an online mode.

However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as a part of The Last of Us Part 2. When and where it will be realized is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are as big a fan of Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready.

Pre-alpha footage of The Last of Us Part 2 has been released and it shows a rather different design to the Shambler enemies that we fought when the game was released. It seems that the creatures had massive red bottoms containing spores and the player had to shoot them in the butt to kill them. Upon death the Shambler’s buttocks exploded releasing spores in to the air. Yep, that was a thing, check out the video.

The footage was released by Naughty Dog’s Matthew Gallant on his personal website but has since been removed.
