Togen Anki - Devil's Blood in our manga review

A very well-known Japanese folk tale from the Muromachi period (1392-1573) is about the peach boy Momotarō, who fought against ogres and was then celebrated as a hero in his home village. Over time, the fairy tale was modified again and again and even used for war propaganda purposes. Mangaka Yura Urushibara was also inspired by the story and incorporated features into his debut manga Togen Anki - Teufelsblut, because in the fairy tale mentioned there, the peach boy Momotarō travels to Devil's Island and defeats the devils living there.

An exciting prelude to a bloody series

As heroic as the fairy tale may sound, the story about the protagonist Shiki Ichinose begins anything but boldly, because at the beginning of the manga he is expelled from school and starts an argument with his foster father. Because as in the fairy tale, Shiki wasn't raised by his biological parents either, and shortly before the argument escalates completely, a member of the Momotaro organization appears and Shiki learns the whole truth about himself.

The blood of the devil flows in his veins and the Momotaro organization has made it its task to kill all devils. Shiki's foster father is also a former member of the organization and dies a short time later from his severe injuries during a fight with the opponent who wants to get Shiki's collar.

The greed for revenge kindles Shiki's true self and yet he can no longer tell his father that he loved him despite everything. A revenge campaign begins and a short time later another stranger appears who not only ties up Shiki, but also wants to examine and test him. He is a lecturer at an academy and also a devil who recruits new members. However, they must have their powers under control in order to be accepted, which is not the case with Shiki at all. Because he is quarrelsome, not the brightest head and beyond that just too hot-headed Shiki can recognize. There he also meets other students who also have devil blood in them, but seem to be much better at using their abilities. A first on-site examination should now show how Shiki asserts himself against the others and whether he can really bring his abilities under control or not.

In Volume 1 by Togen Anki – Teufelsblut turns a student whose biggest problem seems to be school and his annoying foster father, into a young man who seeks revenge for the death of his father and would stop at nothing to do so. He's got what it takes with his new ability, but the power that Felblood bestows on him also worries countless enemies around him. Whether Shiki can assert himself and how he can really bring his abilities under control will be shown as the story unfolds. So far 12 volumes have been published in Japan.
