The fate of E3 rests in the hands of a few

No, it's not ESA's or ReedPop's fault that E3 2023 was cancelled. This was underlined by Christopher Dring, GamesIndustry.biz journalist, who a few hours after the confirmation of the cancellation of this year's show wanted to take stock of the general state of the video game industry, also obtaining a decidedly interesting observation.

Let's start at the beginning: E3, as an event, was not aimed at gamers. It was in its most naïve, most ingenuous form, that of showcases and conferences. In truth, the fair organized by ESA had been desired from its origins by Sony, Nintendo, SEGA and Electronic Arts, the video game majors. We needed a foothold, possibly annual, where to do business. Few had noticed that that industry, born with games created in the garage, was actually becoming more and more mature. And so, as with cinema, the Los Angeles fair was the perfect place to network, discover new talent and establish business relationships. The pandemic, as admitted by the president of ESA, has only accelerated this process.

Dring then makes a bitter reflection on E3 and its future. To decide his return will not be the players, nor the ESA itself, but the major players on the market. Over the last few years, however, all the big publishers and all those who really have the fate of how this industry will move in their hands have made it clear that at the moment there is no more space for the Los Angeles event.

"E3 was created by the likes of Nintendo, EA, Sony and Sega in 1995. And it'll be those same companies, plus a few new ones, who will decide whether it comes back or disappears.

"As of today, the industry's decision seems pretty clear" https://t.co/4YELzpDQ1h

Many are wondering if E3 will become like PAX, Comic Con or Gamescom . For Dring it is not possible. "We already have Gamescom, we already have PAX, we already have Comic Con." The games industry really has everything it can get and it is very likely that ESA has been chosen as a sacrificial victim, in an ever-changing world.
