Xbox 360: Microsoft is selling a poster of the Red Ring of Death

Xbox 360

As part of the promotional material for the Power On documentary series, which tell and celebrate the history of the Xbox brand, Microsoft is selling a poster depicting the much-feared Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death. An initiative that could create a mixture of nostalgia and bad memories for Xbox players.

For the uninitiated, the Red Ring of Death is the name given to an Xbox 360 hardware problem, which was being reported through the three lights on the power button of the console that turned a worrying red color. This failure was, unfortunately, very widespread and fatal for the console, so much so that the players had nicknamed it the Red Ring of Death.

This year Microsoft is celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Xbox brand and as part of the celebrations he made the six-episode docuseries Power On: The Story of Xbox, which traces the most significant moments of the Redmond giant's consoles, games and services, both positive and negative. As part of the initiative, a series of themed articles have arrived on the Gear Xbox store, which pay homage to the history of the brand.

Among these there is also the poster of the Red Ring of Death, a print 18 x 24 inches sold at the price of 24.99 which depicts precisely the fearsome red ring of death of Xbox 360 with the words "Red Ring of Death" at the bottom, which therefore has become in effect the official term of this breakdown in the Xbox "lore".

The official poster of the Red Ring of Death Definitely an interesting initiative, some may find it amusing while others, perhaps those who have been burned by the Xbox Red Ring of Death 360, however, may find it a bit tacky. What do you think?

Xbox is deep into its 20th anniversary celebration, and while Microsoft has given a lot of attention to the highlights of its past, it has also not shied away from its darker moments.

Case in point: this new listing on the Xbox Gear shop for a poster focusing on the Red Ring Of Death, the infamous error display that plagued the Xbox 360 during its eight-year tenure. The print is part of a seven-print series commemorating Power On, the new six-part documentary series that recently debuted on YouTube.

The Red Ring Of Death, for those unaware, was an error display on the front of the Xbox 360 where three of the four lights would blink red instead of all four turning green when powered up. The lights indicated some sort of hardware error that would require the console to be serviced or replaced. A 2009 study of console failures found that nearly a quarter of Xbox 360s saw errors, compared to 10% of PlayStation 3s and 2.7% of Nintendo Wiis.

The Red Ring of Death poster is available at the Xbox Gear shop for $25. Power On, the documentary following Xbox's 20-year lifespan, is available now on YouTube and features the first interview with ex-Xbox boss Don Mattrick since he left Microsoft in 2013.
