However, nothing has been said about the new content of the multiplayer part called Legends. It is only certain that a whole new mode is to be added. Is there a free PS5 upgrade from Ghost of Tsushima?

Now we already know that there will also be free updates for owners of the normal version of Ghost of Tsushima (buy now € 66.50) who do not want to upgrade to the Director's Cut. For example, the photo mode has been expanded to include some features, the quiver of arrows on Jin's back can now be hidden if desired, and two convenience functions for operation are added. With the update, the controls can be freely assigned and in battles there is then a lock-on function to be able to target individual enemies.

Overall, Sony and Sucker Punch seem a fat package for the samurai action -Hit to lace. Last year we were already extremely enraptured by the title in the Ghost of Tsushima test and especially praised the fun, motivating combat system.

'Ghost of Tsushima' Iki Island Expansion: How to Upgrade to the PS5 Director's Cut

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut is scheduled for release this year on PS4 and with an enhanced version for the PS5.

Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Tsushima was one of 2020's highest-rated titles, garnering stellar reviews and multiple 'Game of the Year' nominations. In particular, the open-world samurai game was praised for its beautiful historical setting, engrossing narrative and immensely gratifying swordplay.

The standard version has already been improved for the PS5 once, allowing it to run at a buttery-smooth 60 frames per second and in a much higher resolution. The director's cut will be a more substantial upgrade, introducing a suite of next-gen features and a new island for players to explore.

'Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut': Iki Island Expansion

In a PlayStation Blog post on July 1, Sucker Punch revealed a number of details about Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, which is scheduled for release on August 20. The developer confirmed that the new edition would include everything that was in the original release, as well as the 'Legends' multiplayer mode that was added several months later.

In addition, a new chapter in Jin Sakai's tale will be integrated into the game's second act. For this expansion, you will travel to the neighbouring island of Iki to repel yet another Mongol invasion, but will eventually get wrapped up in a more personal story.

If the previous islands are anything to go by, Iki will have approximately 10-15 hours' worth of content, depending on how thoroughly you explore the map. Sucker Punch also revealed that the expansion would introduce new side activities, enemy types, combat techniques and armor—including some for your horse that will let you mow down opponents.

The developer has even added monkeys for you to pet. All in all, it is shaping up to be a meaty expansion.

The Iki Island content will be unlocked at the beginning of Ghost of Tsushima's second act (provided that you own the director's cut). This point in the story takes about five hours to reach if you are purely focusing on the main quest line.

If you are a PS4 player who is looking to upgrade to the PS5, you will be able to transfer your progress to the new console, so you won't have to sit through those sluggish tutorial missions again.

New players, meanwhile, can pre-order the Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut now and get a head start on the main story by redeeming a complimentary download of the original release.

New Features in 'Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut'

Apart from Iki Island, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut introduces several new features to the base game. Both the PS4 and PS5 versions will boast extra trophies, an optional lock-on function to help you in combat, revised accessibility settings and an additional multiplayer mode.

The PS5 version will receive some next-gen-specific upgrades. The DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will be supported, as will 4K presentation options and 'drastically improved' loading times. If you have already played the game on the PS5, you will know that it looks and performs better than most next-gen exclusives, so it will be exciting to see how it holds up after this optimization.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut on PS5 will also allow you to play the game with authentic Japanese voice-acting that is convincingly lip-synced to the cut scenes.

How Much Is the 'Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut' Upgrade?

Unlike the recent Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS5, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut will not be free at launch, regardless of whether you own the original game.

The price depends on a number of factors.

  • For brand new customers, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut will cost $69.99 on PS5 and $59.99 on PS4.
  • If you already own the standard PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima, you can upgrade to the PS4 director's cut for $19.99. This will entitle you to the Iki Island expansion, the new multiplayer mode and the extra trophies.
  • If you buy the PS4 director's cut, you can upgrade to the PS5 version later for an additional $9.99.
  • If you already own Ghost of Tsushima on PS4, you can upgrade directly to the PS5 version of the director's cut for $29.99. This will entitle you to all the new content.
  • Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut will be released on August 20. To access the new island, you will first need to reach Act 2 of the main story.
