RAM defective for 1.7 billion

In an article published by The Register, SK Hynix admitted that some of its recently shipped DRAM memories were defective and said it was working to determine the extent of the problem. According to Yonhap News, the company also denied it had suffered damages of approximately $ 1.7 billion as a result of this, claiming it was actively investigating the situation alongside the police.

Indeed, last Monday it circulated a rumor that SK Hynix shipped as many as 240,000 wafers with defective memory worth $ 1.7 billion. SK Hynix admitted that while dealing with some defective DRAMs, the damage did not impact all 240,000 wafers. The company said these rumors are only meant to harm its reputation and called the local police to file defamation allegations of unknown persons, thus spurring an official investigation.

240,000 is a substantial number of wafers , exceeding the monthly capacity of a single factory. A failure of this magnitude could involve multiple SK Hynix plants that have been operating for weeks producing defective components, or a single factory that has been making failed DRAMs for several months. Both situations are nearly impossible, given the careful quality checks carried out at the factories during the different stages of production.

A spokesperson for SK Hynix said:

We are currently speaking to a number limited number of customers affected by this problem to resolve the situation. While it is too early to estimate potential losses, we don't think they will be very significant as the defect falls within the range of typical quality control problems.

Nearly a quarter of a million defective DRAM wafers could certainly have a dramatic effect on the global memory market and prices, especially considering we are already in the midst of a supply shortfall due to substantial PC demand and other applications.

SK hynix Inc., South Korea's No. 2 chipmaker, on Tuesday denied a rumor that it is facing damage worth 2 trillion won ($1.7 billion) over defective DRAMs, saying that it has requested a police probe into such a cyber libel.

The rumor over SK hynix's possible loss has been circulating here from Monday night, claiming that the company is dealing with DRAM defects amounting to 240,000 wafers following its clients' complaints.

In a statement, SK hynix emphasized that the rumor is not true and that it has requested a police investigation over such a false claim.
