Netflix, with whom you can share the account since March

Netflix

Announced at the beginning of the year, comes the tightening of account sharing by Netflix. The Los Gatos-based company has thus defined, also for the European and Italian markets, new policies to further limit the possibility of connecting to the streaming service via different devices and from places other than what it defines as the "household".

What is the household? What happens to those who do not return to the household? How does device verification work? What changes for the simultaneous vision? When will the new rules take effect in Italy? Netflix confirms: from 2023 stop to shared accounts The tightening has been announced, which will take place through the analysis of IP addresses, device IDs and account activity. Co-founder Hastings steps down as CEO

What is the household?

According to Netflix, the household represents “a group of people who live in the same location as the owner of the account ” . So families or roommates. The main position of the account is associated with the household, established at the time of its creation through the wifi network on which access is made for the first time.

Through the tracing of the IP address and the IDs of devices, all devices accessing the account from the same primary location will be considered part of the household, at least once every 31 days.

What happens to those who are not part of the household?

Watching Netflix on devices outside your home will be blocked and reviewed . In its notes, the company is very clear “people outside your household will have to use their own account to watch Netflix” . The same goes for those who use an account far from the already registered main position.

How Netflix wants to save itself from the streaming crisis The resignation of the co-CEO and the introduction of advertising herald a new era for the platform, with more attention paid to revenues and less to the number of subscribers

How does device verification work?

Verification is triggered when an account is accessed from a device not associated with the household, or when “the account is used continuously from an outside location” to the primary location from a device included in the household. So both in the event that the account is used by friends with whom the password has been shared, and when the account holder is away from the associated internet network for a long time as the main location.
To verify, upon "suspicious" login, Netflix will send a link to the email address or phone number associated with the primary account holder, with which you will obtain a four-way verification code digits , to be entered on the device from which it was requested within 15 minutes . If it takes longer to enter the code, you can request another one and, once verified, you can continue to use the streaming service. In both cases, the verification will be requested periodically, every 7 days.

What changes for simultaneous viewing?

The number of devices from here to watch Netflix simultaneously will always be established on the basis to the subscribed tariff plan, but only "provided that they belong to people from the same household" . So in order for any shared account to work, it will still be necessary to access the network of the main location at least once every 31 days.

When will the new rules take effect in Italy?

The new policies and the new checks should come into force in Italy starting from March 2023.
