Everything announced on September’s PlayStation Showcase

September’s PlayStation Showcase revealed a host of upcoming PS5 games, including Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarok.

Sony didn’t attend E3 2021, Summer Geoff Game Fest, or Gamescom, preferring to sit out the summer promotional season and leave Nintendo, Xbox and other publishers to fight for coverage.

Instead, PS5 owners have had to be patient and wait for information on upcoming games. The poorly received news of Horizon Forbidden West‘s cross-gen upgrade being the, erm, highlight.

Today’s PlayStation Showcase went some way to rewarding that patience with a promising lineup of PS5 games dated for release or in development.

The showcase opened with an overlong PlayStation promo and the sight of SIE CEO Jim Ryan wearing the same blue shirt my dad wore when he was a postman. Things improved, thankfully, with trailers and announcements for 18 upcoming PlayStation titles.

Here’s a quick roundup of everything on show.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake

The rumoured remake of Bioware’s iconic sci-fi RPG is real. It’s coming to PS5 as a console launch exclusive and is in development at Aspyr, the studio behind the ports of Star Wars: Episode 1 – Racer and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.

Project EVE

Another look at Project EVE, the Unreal Engine 4-based action game from Shift Up. The game is also coming to PC and Xbox Series X|S.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Gameplay footage from Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, the upcoming Borderlands spin-off from Gearbox Studios. It looks like colourful fantasy chaos, and you can shred a Lute. It’s coming to PC and consoles on March 25, 2022.

Forspoken

Square Enix reveals more gameplay from Forspoken, the promising new third-person action game in which the protagonist is zapped through a portal to a mysterious fantasy world. It’s set for release in Spring 2022.

Rainbow Six Extraction

Yet more footage from Ubisoft’s sci-fi-infused online third-person shooter. It looks predictably well-made and predictably uninspiring. The game will escape release quarantine in January 2022.

Alan Wake Remastered

Remedy Entertainment’s beloved 2010 action-adventure makes its PlayStation debut with a visual overhaul, to be released on October 5, 2021.

Grand Theft Auto V

The PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V has been pushed to March 2022. The new version features technical and graphical improvements and seamless character switching. A standalone version of GTA Online will be available as a free download exclusively on PS5 for three months.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

A sumptuous new trailer for Tango Gameworks’ striking action game. Still looks fantastic. Still has a silly villain. Still no release date.

Guardians of the Galaxy

A new trailer for the upcoming Square Enix comedy action game. It’s another visually spectacular effort, even if the humour grates. It’s coming to PlayStation – and other platforms – on October 26, 2021.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Blood Hunt

If the words “free-to-play, third-person battle royale game set in the Vampire: The Masquerade universe” gets you excited… please be excited. Blood Hunt is coming to PS5 later this year.

Deathloop

Arkane Studio’s new time-loop action game is released on September 15, 2021. The new trailer reveals more details about the game’s premise and backstory. Perhaps too much.

Kid A Mnesia

Radiohead and Epic Games are collaborating on a new project to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band’s best albums, Kid A and Amnesiac. (Don’t argue with me, Tom.)

Tchia

Exploration, puzzles, action, and an environmental message. Tchia, from Awaceb, looks absolutely delightful and is a surprise highlight from today’s showcase.

Uncharted 4 Remastered

Naughty Dog’s acclaimed PS4 games Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy get the remaster treatment for PlayStation 5 and – shock, horror – PC!

Marvel Wolverine

A short cinematic reveal trailer for the Marvel Wolverine, a new action game now in development at Insomniac Games.

Gran Turismo 7

Moe footage from Polyphony Digital’s upcoming racer features cars driving very fast and looking very beautiful. The trailer also includes a look at vehicle upgrades, customisation, and the livery editor. Gran Turismo 7 will be released for PS5 and PS4 on March 4, 2022.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 or two Spider-Men? Peter Parker and Miles Morales team up for another open-world superhero adventure from Insomniac. Oh, and Venom is also along for the ride. Swinging to PlayStation in 2023.

God of War Ragnarok

Santa Monica Studio’s sequel sees Kratos, Atreus, and Mimir take a trip to sunnier climes – including Vanaheim, Svartalfheim, and Asgard – on a mission to defeat Ragnorok and Thor. It’s coming to PlayStation 5, at some point.
