Synology, the new DSM 7.0 and four new cloud services arrive

Synology

In a press release, Synology announced the upcoming launch of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.0 and a significant expansion of the C2 platform with four new cloud services. The company has invested heavily in this platform and plans to open a new data center to expand its services in the Asia-Pacific region.

Philip Wong, CEO and founder of Synology, said:

Large amounts of unstructured data are constantly being generated at an exponential rate. Traditional storage solutions are no longer able to keep up with the growing demands for bandwidth and performance. Edge cloud products, such as Synology's storage management offering, are among the fastest growing solutions on the market today, uniquely addressing the challenges facing modern businesses.

Four years of launching and managing our cloud service have allowed us to enrich our experience in data management with new technologies, enabling innovative optimizations that allow us to offer a reliable but extremely competitive solution in terms of costs. We are now studying a path of rapid expansion into additional locations to target potential customers.

The latest evolution of the platform, DSM 7.0 will be available on June 29th. This new release includes brand new hybrid-cloud services, such as Active Insight, a large-scale device monitoring and diagnostics solution, Hybrid Share, which combines the flexibility of C2 storage and its synchronization capabilities with on-premise solutions, and C2 Identity, a hybrid cloud as a service directory to simplify cross-site domain management. There is no shortage of other interesting innovations, such as the support of volumes up to 1 PB, as well as security improvements in the form of Secure SignIn, a simple and immediate two-fact authentication system.

Immediately after the launch of DSM 7.0 (13 July) will also be available: C2 Password, C2 Transfer and C2 Backup, autonomous solutions that meet the modern needs of password protection, sharing of sensitive files and backup of any endpoint and common SaaS cloud services.

How to download Synology's DSM 7.0 OS update ahead of June 29 launch

Synology is set to release DiskStation Manager 7.0 on June 29, but the company has already made the release candidate (RC) available for testing. If you don't want to wait for the official release date, you can install the update on your NAS and see how the upcoming update compares to DSM 6.

As with all pre-release software downloads, we don't recommend you deploy the DSM 7.0 RC to a live NAS or one that has data you haven't yet backed up. It's still considered in-production and there could be a fatal flaw that Synology has yet to fix ahead of the public release.

Synology DSM 7.0: New features

The largest improvement to DSM is the UI refresh. Much like Microsoft and Windows 11, Synology has revamped parts of the NAS OS to match the decade we're now in. With DSM 7.0, it's easier than ever before to set up Plex on a Synology NAS. The OS looks far more slick and modern

DSM 6 wasn't ugly by any stretch, but it was starting to show its age, especially as Synology competitors worked to improve their own OS solutions. The login system has been completely revamped, allowing you to enter a username and use a third-party authenticator to log in. In the world of two-factor authentication, this is a fantastic improvement, and it even works with FIDO2.

There are countless other changes and improvements, which I've covered in our Synology DSM 7.0 update hub.

Synology DSM 7.0: How to install

I'm going to reiterate our warning. Please do not install the DSM 7.0 RC on a live NAS you are currently using unless you're okay with it potentially breaking something.

The NAS will then run through the installation process and will reboot. Sit back, relax, and read through the list of new features in the meantime.
