Gundam Universal Century Development Action: sustainable project for Gundam

Gundam Universal Century Development Action

Bandai Namco Group has announced that it has launched a sustainable project called Gundam Universal Century Development Action. What is the purpose of the project? The goal is to tackle the problems related to the human population and the terrestrial environment, putting in place new ideas and technologies.

Gundam Universal Century Development Action: what does it consist of

The project Gundam Universal Century Development Action brings together multiple initiatives and proposals. The first is the "Gunpla Recycle Project", a joint project between Bandai Namco Holdings, Bandai Spirits, Bandai Amusement and Bandai Logipal.

These companies aim to use state-of-the-art chemical recycling technology to reconvert models of Gundam plastic (otherwise known as Gunpla) in new buildings. About 190 facilities operated by Bandai Namco Amusement, starting with every Namco store in Japan, have installed a recycling box as of April 1. The collected materials will be sent to the Bandai Hobby Center in Shizuoka, which deals with the production of Gunpla.

The second initiative of the project is the “Gundam Open Innovation” plan, which will collect ideas and technologies on the theme of sustainability. A conference will be held in July, and registrations will be open during the same period. Further details will be announced later.

Bandai Namco Group's ultimate goal is a 35% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050. It aims to implement new energy-saving and sustainable technologies in all its entertainment facilities, factories, offices and other operational areas.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: the next Netflix anime

Vi remember that on July 1st the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway (Kidō Senshi Gundam: Senkō no Hathaway) will land on Netflix, the new feature film of the Kidou Senshi Gundam saga.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is the first of three film adaptations of the series of novels written by Yoshiyuki Tomino, original author of the series, Hathaway's Flash. It sees the young son of Bright Noa as the protagonist who, after the events of Char's Counterattack, will take the field as a pilot of the Xi Gundam.

Shukou Murase (Ergo Proxy, Gangsta, Witch Hunter Robin, Genocidal Organ) is directing the project and Yasuyuki Mutou (Basilisk, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE: 0096, Deadman Wonderland) is writing the script. Pablo Uchida, Naoyuki Onda and Shigeki Kuhara are adapting Haruhiko Mikimoto's original character designs for animation. Hajime Katoki, Kimitoshi Yamane, Seiichi Nakatani and Nobuhiko Genba are adapting Yasuhiro Moriki's mechanical drawings for animation. Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack of the Giants, Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative, Mobile Suit Gundam UC) is composing the music.

From more than 40 years ago, the 'GUNDAM' series has brought to global attention the precarious state of the Earth and its environment, symbolized by a fictitious new era known as the 'Universal Century' that marked the start of space emigration within the story. An underlying theme in 'GUNDAM' is how humankind faces the vast frontiers of space, not as individuals, but as an entire race.

BANDAI NAMCO Group believes that the messages brought up in 'GUNDAM' that touch upon the human population and the environment resonates with many current-day concerns. Hence, the Group will be taking action for children of the future as it works with fans and external partners in bringing about a better world by learning from the fictional era in GUNDAM in preparation for a real-world 'Universal Century.'

Leading the initiative, BANDAI NAMCO Holdings, BANDAI SPIRITS, BANDAI NAMCO Amusement, and BANDAI LOGIPAL together launched the 'Gunpla Recycling Project' in April 2021. The project seeks to gather from fans the empty runners that remain after building Gunpla models, and to recycle them into new plastic model products by using the latest chemical recycling technology. With the help of its fans, the BANDAI NAMCO Group companies are committed into realizing a sustainable society.

Back in 2018 and 2019, BANDAI NAMCO Group launched the BANDAI NAMCO Accelerator to gather business ideas that are not bound to conventional business models and common sense in an effort to bring about changes that can lead the Group to the next level.

BANDAI NAMCO Accelerator has taken a new form, and will be newly launched as the next initiative to GUDA under the project name, 'GUNDAM Open Innovation.' The 'GUNDAM Open Innovation' project seeks to gather new ideas and technologies from fans and external partners worldwide in an effort to address concerns stemming from the human population and the environment by using the 'GUNDAM' brand.

Last December, the Group opened to the public the 18-meter-tall, full-scale moving GUNDAM statue at GUNDAM FACTORY YOKOHAMA. This was brought about from the various efforts of those involved, and from the desire of seeing an actual, full-scale GUNDAM move in real life. In like manner, the Group believes that it can bring to reality concepts never seen before by gathering and applying ideas inspired from the fictional world of 'GUNDAM.'

BANDAI NAMCO Group will announce further details on its project later on its official website. It looks forward to seeing everyone's comments and ideas from around the world.
