Netflix has unveiled the anime series based on Onimusha, the game from Capcom. The announcement came during the TUDUM on September 24, 2022. Along with the announcement, some images from the anime were shared, which you can see below.

Netflix has confirmed that the series is created by Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai from the Sublimation team, with Musashi Miyamoto modeled after Toshiro Mifune.

Takashi Miike has created Blade of the Immortal, Crows Zero, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable, Terraformars and more: it will be the chief director of the series. The director is Shinya Sugai, known for the animated series Dragon's Dogma and Shikizakura. Toshiro Mifune is a prolific actor (Rashomon, Seven Samurai).

Onimusha is an action and survival game set in Japan's Sengoku era (1467 - 1603). The game also offers a series of supernatural elements, which we should also find in the Netflix anime. The most recent game is the remaster of Onimusha: Warlords of 2019.

It is not the first time that the game becomes an animated product: in fact there is the 2006 CG film Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, made by merging the scenes in CG of the PlayStation 2 game of the same name and adding extra sections.

Other Netflix products were also unveiled during the TUDUM, such as The Witcher Blood Origin with the release date.

Onimusha anime series announced for Netflix

Capcom’s Onimusha series making a return but not in video game form. Instead, Netflix has announced that an Onimusha anime series is in production for the streaming platform. No release date has been confirmed yet. It is being directed by Takashi Miike, who has previously worked on Yakuza Apocalypse and Ace Attorney. The announcement came with a few shots from the Onimusha anime, which you can view below.

The last time anything Onimusha related came out was the remaster of Onimusha Warlords in 2019, which originally released on PS2. In our review for Onimusha Warlords, I wrote, “For the relatively low asking price Onimusha Warlords is worth a look if you’ve ever been interested in the series or just want to slay demons in historical Japan. Just beware you’ll have to contend with some game design elements that belong in the early 2000s. It’s not a terribly long game and you can get through it in a few hours, but it’ll keep you entertained throughout.”

The Onimusha franchise began with the released of Onimusha: Warlords in 2001. This was followed a year later by Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. In 2003 spin offs Onimusha Tactics and Onimusha Blade Warriors released, followed by Onimusha 3: Demon Siege in 2004. Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams arrived in 2006. A Japan only browser game called Onimusha Soul was released in 2012, and then there was nothing until 2019 with the first game’s remaster. There was also a title that never saw the light of day called Onimusha: Curtain of Darkness.

Whether the anime, along with the 2019 remaster release, is something Capcom is using to gauge interest in the franchise is unknown. It could be that if viewing figures are high then Capcom may consider another Onimusha game, be it a remaster or an Onimusha 4. Only time will tell if that is the case though.
