AMD 4700S is PS5's APU
Several months ago we told you about the sighting of the mysterious AMD 4700S desktop kit, consisting of a CPU based on the eight-core Zen 2 architecture with support for Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT). In addition, the kit was equipped with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, the same amount present in the Xbox Series X.Credit: Bodnara Credit: Bodnara Precisely these details led to think that the Sunnyvale company had recovered components that did not they met the requirements for Xbox Series X, then reselling them as 4700S. Logically, AMD cannot simply distribute the same processor it manufactures for Microsoft (for obvious reasons) and, therefore, the chip could be the result of a faulty die with a malfunctioning integrated GPU. Given the lack of an integrated GPU in the processor, the installation of a dedicated graphics card is required. Unfortunately, despite the presence of a PCIe x16 slot on a mechanical level, in reality the connection is only made using four lines.
Apparently, according to Bodnara (later taken up by TechPowerUp), the AMD desktop kit 4700S is not based on an Xbox Series X, but on the Playstation 5. In fact, we find a CPU with Zen 2 architecture with eight cores and sixteen threads that can reach the frequency of 3.2Ghz. The board that was tested was equipped with SK Hynix GDDR6 memory that spin at a speed of 14Gb / s, positioned in the back. The APU is connected to AMD's A77E Fusion Controller Hub (FCH), also used on the Xbox One “Durango” SoC, a detail that had actually suggested that it was originally intended for Xbox Series X.
The integrated GPU has been disabled, but it is the same one, based on RDNA2, used on the PS5. The Bodnara team ran its tests by installing a dedicated Radeon 550 graphics card, yielding the results below.
