BMW and Ford ever closer to new generation batteries

Solid Power, a US developer of solid-state electric vehicle batteries, is working with BMW and Ford to develop the first pilot production line of next-generation batteries.

The first official batch will be destined exclusively for internal tests and only later will they arrive in the hands of the builders; in any case, the first road tests by BMW and Ford are already expected by the end of this year. Doug Campbell told Reuters that the new technology will be a real change of pace for all future electric.

SP's new production line will be able to produce up to 300 cells per week, which is equivalent to about 15,000 cells per year; most of them will naturally be destined for the automotive sector. "With the pilot line of electric vehicle cells now installed, our next big challenge is to start large-scale production and build cells that meet the requirements to enable us to enter automotive qualification by the end of the year," he said. But what changes compared to batteries currently in use? The advantages in solid state batteries are remarkable; have the ability to have more capacity in a smaller format, cost less to produce, and offer superior performance. In addition, solid state batteries significantly reduce the risk of fire. At the moment there are no clear details on the cuts and ranges, but the hope is that this technology will give BMW (or Ford) the necessary cue to achieve the performance of Tesla and Lucid Air.
