Audiovisual piracy is decreasing (after the pandemic)

Surely, piracy has always been one of the scourges that have most negatively affected the economy linked to the audiovisual market. Now, as reported by ANSA (here the original news), it seems that there has been a small turnaround for our country: an overall incidence of audiovisual piracy at 38% in the last year and a decline in acts illegal to 57 million, a significantly lower number than an average two-month period in 2019.

During the pandemic linked to the health emergency, piracy led to 243 million illegal acts during the first lockdown and a general loss for the sector of 591 million euros. Now, the latest numbers show a sort of return to a less tense situation, thanks to the data processed by the Ipsos company on behalf of FAPAV - Federation for the Protection of Audiovisual and Multimedia Content. Between 7 and 12 May last, more precisely on a sample of a thousand people interviewed, in the last year the decline - understood as the incidence and number of illegal acts - concerns in particular physical piracy, while digital piracy has increased by 4. % compared to 2019, slightly down only as regards the download and streaming components (not IPTV).

The piracy of live sporting events after the lockdown instead results in a worrying recovery, more particularly on 14 % in the last 12 months, an increase compared to 10% compared to 2019. The most pirated content remains films, from 25% to 31%, while both series and fiction have seen an increase from 20% to 23% . Eleven million Italians have instead used illegal IPTV at least once, 21% in the last twelve months against 19% during the lockdown that began in March 2020. Finally, only 37% are fully aware of committing a real crime criminally prosecutable.

Fapav finally underlined that audiovisual piracy remains in any case a thorn in the side of the audiovisual content industry, with inevitable consequences for the economic and employment system of our country. In fact, at a time like the present one, better contrast strategies are in fact the only way to restart the sector after the blow due to the health emergency.
