Loki: Tom Hiddleston explains the title font

Loki

There are now only a few weeks left until the arrival of Loki, the new Marvel series for Disney + centered on the character of the God of Deception made famous all over the world by the interpretation of Tom Hiddleston in the Thor and Avengers films. Especially after the publication of the new trailer, expectations begin to rise and even the authors of the series begin to unbutton themselves more.

In particular, the leading actor has said his about the particular choice for the logo of the title, with the four letters each with a different font and even iridescent in animation.

During an interview with Empire Online, Tom Hiddleston commented:

“I would like to preserve the sense of novelty of the series for when it airs, but one thing I'd like to think about is its logo, which seems to recharge and restore itself. The font of how “Loki” is written seems to keep changing shape. Loki is the shapeshifter par excellence. The changing nature of him through the MCU makes him such that you don't know if he is a hero, a villain or an anti-hero. You don't know if you can trust him. He literally and physically changes form into an Asgardian guard, or Captain America, all the time. Thor talks about how he could turn into a snake.

I think the changing logo can give you an idea that Loki, the series, is about identity, and about the integration of the disparate fragments of the different personalities that it can be, and maybe the many personalities that we are. I thought it was very exciting because I have always found Loki to be a very complex construct. Who is this character who can wear so many masks, and change shape and seem to change his external feelings so abruptly? “

The series will debut exclusively on Disney + on June 11th.

Loki's Tom Hiddleston Explains How Disney+ TV Logo Is A Big Clue

Published: Apr. 12. 2021 1:10 PM

Disney and Marvel Studios’ Loki series is just months away from making its Disney+ debut. The official trailer dropped recently, giving fans clues as to what the trickster could be up to since his cheeky appearance in Avengers: Endgame. Now, Tom Hiddleston reveals that some clues have been right in front of our faces this entire time.

The logo for the new series is different than logos of most Marvel projects. Each letter is different, never once the same. Tom Hiddleston told Empire that much like the show itself Loki’s font-shifting title card directly represents the God of Mischief and plays on one of his signature abilities. Hiddleston explained:

The font of how Loki is spelled out seems to keep changing shape. Loki is the quintessential shapeshifter. His mercurial nature is that you don’t know whether, across the MCU, he’s a hero or a villain or an anti-hero. You don’t know whether you can trust him. He literally and physically changes shape into an Asgardian guard, or into Captain America repeatedly. Thor talks about how he could change into a snake.

While the series does take place following the events of Avengers: Endgame and seemingly takes Loki through alternate timelines, it will be much more than that. During the same interview, Tom Hiddleston suggested that the shapeshifting logo might give fans a good idea of what the show is trying to hit upon when it comes to the titular character. Hiddleston said:

I think that shapeshifting logo might give you an idea that Loki, the show, is about identity, and about integrating the disparate fragments of the many selves that he can be, and perhaps the many selves that we are. I thought it was very exciting because I’ve always found Loki a very complex construct. Who is this character who can wear so many masks, and changes shape, and seems to change his external feeling on a sixpence?

So it sounds like the show will also explore Loki’s struggle with identity and help to define exactly how he is after everything he's been through thus far. Loki's been in the MCU for nearly a decade, and it's definitely time we take a look at some of his internal issues, even if this isn't exactly the main Loki we've come to know.

Fans may remember that in Avengers: Endgame, the heroes time travelled to 2012 New York to gather Infinity Stones in order to ultimately bring back those Thanos killed. During this time, Loki stole the Tesseract and, after making off with it, he went through a portal and wasn’t seen again. When it was confirmed that Loki would follow the events of the fourth Avengers film, it was just a question of what his subsequent journey would be. And even with the trailer, it’s hard to predict what's to come.

Despite the mystery still surrounding the show, it should be an interesting watch for fans, especially since Loki is one of the few Marvel characters to be resurrected under such unique circumstances. We'll also be watching closely to see just how much that logo truly correlates with the story being told.

Loki debuts on Disney+ on Friday, June 11.
