Google, Chrome 90 introduces some interesting news

Google

Google has finally released the stable version 90 of its popular Chrome web browser which includes several security enhancements, a new AV1 encoder and changes the default protocol to HTTPS to ensure more secure connections. In particular, as reported by colleagues at Bleeping Computer, 37 bugs have been fixed, including a zero-day used in the Pwn2Own contest and released publicly on Twitter last Monday.

The transition to the HTTPS protocol is quite important. by default, as now any URL entered in the address bar will automatically be treated as an HTTPS connection. Previously, however, the more classic HTTP was used. This will not only ensure safer connections, but also fewer redirects, as many sites already redirect from HTTP to HTTPS automatically. However, there are some exceptions to this new rule, as "IP addresses, single-label domains and reserved hostnames like test / or localhost / will continue to be set to HTTP by default", as specified by Google on its blog. .

Chrome 90 also includes additional protection from NAT Slipstreaming attacks by blocking FTP, HTTP and HTTPS connected to port 554. NAT Slipstreaming attacks abuse a router's Application Level Gateway (ALG) functionality to achieve access to any port on an internal network, potentially allowing threat actors to access services normally protected by the router.

Finally, Chrome 90 now includes an AV1 encoder to increase performance in video conferencing software using WebRTC for greater efficiency in terms of compression and to allow the transmission of video streams even by users with a connection with a very low bandwidth.

(Bloomberg) -- Google announced a series of pledges on Thursday to fund and promote coronavirus vaccines across the globe, including $250 million in advertising grants for pro-vaccination groups.

Through its philanthropy arm, Google will pay for 250,000 shots in “low and middle-income countries,” as classified by Google’s partner Gavi, a charity focused on vaccine distribution.

Google is also committing $2.5 million for pop-up vaccination sites and related efforts in Black, Latino and rural U.S. communities. The $250 million in ad grants will fund more than 2.5 billion vaccine-related public service announcements, according to a blog post from Karen DeSalvo, Google’s chief health officer.

Google hired DeSalvo, a former Obama official, and other medical veterans for a new health division and the Alphabet Inc. unit has taken several public steps to combat the pandemic. The company tailored search results for online queries about the virus and offers vaccination locations in Google Maps. In March 2020, Google pledged $800 million in pandemic relief for frontline workers and ad credits for health organizations.

However the company’s video arm, YouTube, has been criticized for airing videos questioning Covid-19 vaccines. Google’s contact-tracing efforts have gone largely unused by governments and a Covid-19 testing project from Verily, an Alphabet health unit, ended in California in less than a year.
