No PCIe 5.0 for AMD's 600 chipsets

Over the past few days, we've been talking a lot about AMD's new Ryzen 7000 processors, after the company held its conference at Computex 2022. We remind you that the CPUs, codenamed "Raphael", will be built on TSMC's 5nm process node, as well as based on the Zen 4 architecture, which will introduce several improvements, including a higher IPC, support for technologies such as DDR5 and PCI Express 5.0 and the integration of an RDNA 2-based GPU.

Until now, it has always been said that the PCIe 5.0 interface will be supported by the CPU, but it has not been specified whether the same would be also valid for the c hipset series 600. However, a clue has come via the PCI-SIG website, on which the interoperability of AMD 600 chipsets with PCIe 4.0 x4 devices with a data transfer rate of 16GT / s has been confirmed, which could indicate the lack of support. to PCIe 5.0. This means that AMD and ASMedia, the company that designs chipsets for AMD, should work on any new revisions in the future to keep up with rivals.

For now, we just have to wait for an official communication from AMD and the major motherboard manufacturers to confirm that PCIe 5.0 will only be supported by Ryzen 7000 processors and not also by the new 600 series chipsets. It is also possible that the chipset certification will come at a later date and that AMD and ASMedia are working to fix any issues before the release.

During the latest episode of "The Full Nerd" webcast by PCWorld, Robert Hallock (AMD Director of Technical Marketing) and Frank Azor (Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions) intervened to answer some questions and reveal new details about the AMD Ryzen 7000 processors and the news of the AM5 platform. All the details in our previous dedicated article.
