Thundercats: a new movie coming

Thundercats

The 1980s continue to be a source of great inspiration even today; from plans for a new movie about Ninja Turtles to the Transformers War for Cybertron trilogy, to Netflix's new Masters of the Universe series. The Thundercats will soon be added to this list, for which a film has been announced very recently.

Deadline colleagues have in fact reported that director Adam Wingard will direct and collaborate in the writing of the new feature film dedicated to anthropomorphic felines, which seems to be a hybrid between a live action and an animated film. Next to Wingard there will be Simon Barrett for the production of the script.

Adam Wingard said he was a big fan of the classic cartoon series, so much so that he confessed that already in high school he had already written down a script for a Thundercats movie. During an interview about the film he jokingly stated:

“No one on this planet knows or has thought as much about Thundercats as I do.

I saw the opportunity to make a new kind of science fiction fantasy film, something people have never seen before. It possesses a rich mythology; the characters are great. The colors ... I want to make a Thundercats film that brings back that 80s aesthetic. I don't want to reinvent their appearance; I want them to look just like the Thundercats. I don't even want to do it live action. I don't want him to look like Cats, I don't want that kind of trouble - no disrespect for that director, who I don't intend to put down any more than others have already. I want to make a movie that has never been seen before. A hybrid film with CGI that has a realistic look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI. This is the starting point and Simon Barrett and I are working on the script. "

It therefore seems that the director's tastes are well rooted in pop culture. We also remember that Adam Wingard has already directed 2016 Blair Witch, Death Note - The notebook of death and the recent Godzilla vs. Kong.

Did you know that there is a cross over between the Masters of the Universe and the Thundercats where we see He-Man and Lion-O side by side? You can find the comic on Amazon at this link.

Adam Wingard To Direct ‘ThunderCats’ Movie & Wants To Keep Aesthetic of Original Cartoon

Warner Bros. has been sitting on the film rights to cult cartoon series “ThunderCats” for over a decade and it looks like there is finally movement on their long-in-development feature film. Debuting in 1985, the sci-fi/fantasy cartoon focused on a group of cat-like humanoids that had adventures on an alien planet, Third Earth. The original run of the show had a very unique look as the animation was handled by a studio in Japan and was essentially an anime written by Americans.
