Migrants
Landings of migrants are on the rise. Or at least, points out the European agency Frontex, which is in charge of patrolling the Union's borders, they are along the central Mediterranean route, the one that has the coasts of Italy as its outlet. According to the Interior Ministry, led by Minister Matteo Piantedosi, in the first two months of 2023 arrivals are triple those recorded in the same period of 2022, as well as in the previous year. As of February 10 , the Ismu Foundation recalls , there were already 225 migrants who died at sea in 2023.After Sunday's shipwreck along the coast of Calabria , which cost the lives of at least 64 people , sportsgaming.win tries to take stock of the landings of migrants in this first glimpse of 2023.
What we know about the route of migrants from Turkey to Italy The people arriving in Italy through this route have tripled in the space of three years. In Calabria, only in 2022, 18 thousand landed
The central Mediterranean route
In its latest monthly report, the European border guard agency Frontex reports an increase in arrivals along the central Mediterranean route, that is, the one that leads from the Libyan and Tunisian coasts to the Italian ones. In the month of January alone, 4,526 people traveled this route, an increase of 49% compared to the same month in 2022.Click here if you do not see the graph As can be seen from the bar graph, only the route that passes along the eastern border of Europe (red column) has seen a higher percentage growth than that relating to the central Mediterranean (green column). This situation can be explained by the fact that in January last year the Russian invasion of Ukraine had not yet begun.
However, looking at the treemap, the box located in the lower part (top right for desk readers) which expresses the values in absolute numbers, it can be seen that in the month of January the most traveled route is the one passes through the Western Balkans. It is a land route, less dangerous than the sea route in the winter months. But, precisely, this circumstance does not seem to apply to the central Mediterranean route.
Landings in Italy
Confirming the content of the monthly Frontex report, there are also the dashboard data daily statistic (this is the official name) produced by the Ministry of the Interior. According to which, as of February 28, there were 14,433 migrants landed in Italy. A triple figure compared to 5,474 in 2022 and 5,033 in the same period of the previous year.Click here if you don't see the graph The graph shows the monthly trend of landings along our coasts. To reach the levels seen in February 2023, last year we had to wait for May, in 2021 even July. That is, the warmer months, when even the weather conditions make crossing the Strait of Sicily less dangerous.
The trend of deaths
The Ismu Foundation presented the 28th edition of its Report on migrations. A document that reports, among others, the data relating to deaths in the Mediterranean collected by the International Organization for Migration, a United Nations agency, as part of the Missing migrant project .To allow for a comparison between 2023 and the previous ten years, sportsgaming.win calculated the daily average of deaths:
Click here if you don't see the graph The 225 men, women and children who died in the Mediterranean in the first 40 days of 2023 translate thus in an average of 5.49 deaths per day. A value, it should be remembered, which refers to the central part of winter, when landings are less. This means that if the values of the years of the migrant crisis of the middle of the last decade are still far away, the risk exists that these numbers will rise with the summer season.
