Mercedes Benz obtains the certification, from the German Federal Transport Authority, to operate without a driver inside the Stuttgart Airport car park. Soon, therefore, some of his cars will park themselves.

Born from the collaboration with Bosch and announced in 2019, the project should have already become a reality on the previous generation of the S-Class but the COVID-19 pandemic has brought the German automaker to postpone debut of new technology.

The world's first approval for customer use of our highly automated, driverless parking feature, developed together with our technology partner Bosch, demonstrates that innovation leadership and 'Made in Germany' go hand in hand. After the market launch of our level 3 DRIVE PILOT system, we will soon offer a level 4 system for parking with our INTELLIGENT PARK PILOT, all this year. We are really showing our customers how technology can make life easier and give back valuable time, says Markus Schäfer, member of the management board of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer, responsible for development and procurement.

According to information released by the company, the Level 4 "hands-free" automatic parking will soon be implemented on the Mercedes S-Class and EQS equipped with the optional Intelligent Park Pilot. The new feature will be directly available to the driver when entering the Stuttgart Airport car park thanks to the Over-the-air updates.

Driverless parking is a key aspect of automated mobility. The highly automated parking system that we have developed together with our partner Mercedes-Benz shows how far we have already progressed along this development path. It will be with driverless parking that everyday automated driving will begin, says Dr. Markus Heyn, member of the Bosch board of management and president of the Mobility Solutions business area.

Not surprisingly, it will be necessary to make a reservation via the app which will assign a parking space to the vehicle. Subsequently, by accessing the garage via the app in contactless mode, it is possible to leave the car in the dedicated space: the S-Class or EQS electronics will take care of the rest.
