Non-ATX 3.0 power supplies and new GPUs
The next generation of NVIDIA and AMD video cards, equipped with the PCI Express 5.0 interface, will be quite energy-intensive, so much so that the products will be equipped with the new 12VHPWR connector, capable of delivering up to 600W. As a result, PSUs are also being upgraded to the ATX 3.0 specification, so they are ready to stably and reliably supply power to new components.
However, some manufacturers are simply marketing ATX 2.0 PSUs with 8-inch adapters. 12VHPWR pins that "should work fine", but according to PCI-SIG, this is not the truth at all. In fact, the specifications of the cables and connectors are different, so it may not be safe to rely on the use of multiple 8-pin connectors to get one 12VHPWR. Here is what PCI-SIG said regarding the security risks associated with using power supplies that do not meet ATX 3.0 requirements:
PCI-SIG has learned that some implementations of 12VHPWR connectors have demonstrated thermal variations which, under certain conditions, could cause safety problems. Although the PCI-SIG specification provides the details necessary for interoperability, it does not include all aspects of proper design, relying on many standard methods and practices known to the industry. As the PCI-SIG working groups include many experts in the field of connector and system design, they will review the information available on this problem and contribute to its resolution as appropriate.
As more details emerge, PCI-SIG may provide further updates. In the meantime, we recommend members to work closely with their connector suppliers and to use appropriate precautions in the use of high-power connections, particularly when safety concerns exist.

The new MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 PSU is the 'ultimate future-proof power supply unit' says MSI, given that it rocks Intel's new ATX 3.0 specification that helps increase reliability, improve power efficiency, and allow next-gen graphics cards to chew down on 600W of power. ATX 3.0 was created in response to the growing needs of graphics cards, where they strive for more performance: and thus, more power.
ATX 3.0 puts 'heavy emphasis on power excursions' which is something we've been hearing about for a while now, and something MSI says is there to 'make sure high-performance graphics cards can be sustained and your system can remain stable. MSI explains that its MEG Ai1300P PCIe 5.0 testing results: 'From the chart below you can see that the MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 can safely achieve 2x total power excursion at 200% of the PSU wattage while meeting all the standards of Intel Testing Requirements at 120%, 160%, and 180% as well. The voltage of MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 can be controlled within the allowable voltage range when the current changes rapidly and violently to maintain the system stability and avoid system abnormalities'.
The new MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 PSU has a native 16-pin (12VHPWR) PCIe power connector, ready to handle 600W over a single cable. MSI is using higher-quality copper alloy terminals for better safety, in order to handle the higher currents needed by high-end GPUs and CPUs of the future.
