Steam, Epic Games Store and PayPal blocked in Indonesia by the government


Indonesia has blocked its citizens from a number of online services and platforms, including Steam, Epic Games Store, Origin, PayPal, and Yahoo, as they failed to comply with new government-enforced online content moderation laws. .

The new regulation imposed by Jakarta required that companies deemed "suppliers of private electronic systems" register in the government databases by July 27, under penalty of a ban on operating in the country at a national level.

How come Valve, Epic Games and the others didn't comply with the law? A possible explanation could be linked to the suffocating restrictions of this requirement.

According to the "MR5" law introduced in Indonesia in 2020, the government has the possibility to obtain the data of the users of the online platforms connected to their databases and force companies to remove the contents "that disturb the public order "or considered illegal in a very short period of time, ranging from 4 to a maximum of 24 hours. A 2021 Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) report called Indonesian laws "invasive of human rights" as they put online platforms and services at the mercy of local government.

In any case, as the 'market analyst Daniel Ahmad, the blockade imposed by the government of Jakarta is not permanent, with the companies involved still having time to register and adapt to local regulation.

Meanwhile, according to Ahmad, Indonesian citizens cannot make payments with PayPal or play some online games. No problem with the digital services offered by Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Google, TikTok, Twitter, Netflix and Spotify, which instead have decided to comply with the laws of Indonesia.
