Delivery times for new cars will not return to normal in the short term

In recent months, for reasons not directly related to the automotive segment, significant delivery delays have been recorded by all manufacturers. While for some it was a matter of waiting just a few more weeks, for others the time was extended up to almost a year; as if that were not enough, the second-hand market has also undergone a strong change with a continuous upward adjustment of prices, as a direct response to the absence of new cars.

Is the situation improving? Maybe, but it will probably take a few more months. According to reports from the consultancy Arthur D Little, the crisis could continue throughout 2023 due, again, to semiconductors.

There is no short-term solution. Semiconductor manufacturing plants take "up to three years" to build, the conflict in Ukraine is ongoing, and the escalation of tension between China and Taiwan is the "biggest risk" that awaits us, Hoppe said. About 90% of the most advanced semiconductors (five nanometers or smaller) are made in Taiwan.
