Waymo and Uber together for the future of self-driving trucks

Waymo Via and Uber Technology Freight formalize that they have signed a new partnership that aims at the automated driving of heavy vehicles. Although the two companies have not released details revealed at the timing, the new agreement was born with the aim of allowing all Waymo customers to use self-driving trucks more efficiently thanks to the transport planning that can take place through the special software created by Uber Freight.

Not surprisingly, in recent years the growing diffusion of online commerce has led to a substantial increase in the demand for shipping. The consequent shortage of drivers has therefore pushed the logistics sector to create autonomous transport solutions. Companies see autonomous driving as a targeted solution to cut costs over long distances in American cities.

By combining the Waymo Via solution with the Uber Freight platform, we will be able to apply proven market technology to help to dynamically implement Waymo Driver where it is needed, the release reads.

This partnership is an exciting step forward and we are proud to work alongside the extraordinary team of Waymo Via to pave the way for a freight transport network that aims at complete optimization in a new era of logistics. Uber Freight's extensive, efficient and reliable digital network is essential to making autonomous trucks a reality, commented Lior Ron.

Waymo's goal is to launch its first driverless trucks as early as the next few years, starting on the Texas I-45 between Dallas and Houston.
