Shipments of magnetic tapes for data storage grew in 2021

Magnetic tapes, despite being based on a rather outdated technology, are still widely used for storing large amounts of data, so much so that in 2021 shipments increased by 40%, reaching a total of 148Exabytes (equal to 155 million TB ). However, due to the increase in density per tape, drive shipments have decreased (a single cartridge can now hold 54TB thanks to LTO-9 technology).

Despite significant business disruptions and uncertainty in 2021, LTO tape shipments achieved their largest increase since 2006, surpassing the previous record set in 2019. We are continuing to see organizations return to tape technology, looking for storage solutions that offer high capacity, reliability, long-term data archiving and stronger data protection measures, especially as threats cybersecurity goes up.

LTO tape is probably the simplest and cheapest method of getting ransomware recovery best practices. Ransomware and malware are threats that won't go away. Magnetic tape is an established, understood and proven technology that can be a valuable tool in defeating ransomware.
