It all started with a job posting found by Protocol on the appropriate page of the official Amazon site for personal search ads. The first announcement is currently offline, but reportedly explicitly referred to an XR / AR device and related XR / AR software; these acronyms refer to the so-called extended reality (XR) or extended reality, which concerns the mixture between virtual and real environments and the interactions between man and machine through software and wearable devices and to augmented reality AR which is well known since it concerns the creation of an enriched layer of digital information superimposed on the real world (practical example, Pokémon Go). The second announcement concerns the San Francisco area and is aimed at a senior product manager in the tech area to "Develop an advanced XR research concept into a magical, useful and unreleased consumer product" and at the time of writing this piece is still visible.
All very nice, but how and what will this mysterious gadget be? It is likely to imagine a smart device of the Echo line with a dedicated interface that is three-dimensional and connected and the most immediate example is that of a pair of glasses capable of recognizing environments, objects (read: especially the products that can be purchased), who can listen to voice commands via Alexa to control home automation accessories, to manage the multimedia library, to buy and so on. Even if it is not sure that it will be smart glasses, this hypothesis is the most eligible, also because it will compete with projects already underway such as those of Meta with Oculus (and new viewers on the way) or Microsoft with Hololens. All that remains is to wait for official announcements, which should not be long.
