Barack Obama accompanies us to discover the national parks of the world

What can a retired US president do? Certainly a lot of things, and Barack Obama is certainly not one without interests. However, his latest adventure is somewhat unexpected: he will in fact be the narrator of a new docuseries arriving on Netflix in April, entitled Our Great National Parks and of which a trailer has been released in the past few hours. The title is quite eloquent: it will be a spectacular journey to discover the most important nature reserves in the world, from that of Monterey Bay in California to Tvaso National Park in Kenya, passing through the Gunung Leuser park in the rainforests of Indonesia. "When humanity began to protect these unspoiled places it did not realize how important they would become: they are a refuge for endangered species but also a breeding ground for scientific research," we hear the former president say.

The series in five episodes was announced last February as part of the productions that the company of Barack and his wife Michelle Obama are providing to Netflix through their company Higher Ground Productions. Founded in 2018, in recent years the company has produced documentaries such as American Factory (winner of the Oscar for best documentary), Crip Camp, Becoming following the life of Michelle herself, and more children's series dedicated to healthy eating such as Waffles + Mochi and inspirational animated series like We The People. The general intent is to produce high quality content with a very strong social and political impact. When it was announced months ago, however, no one expected Our Great National Parks to come with the voice of Barack Obama.

However, his commitment to the planet is not surprising: Obama, who recently made headlines for taking Covid, has always been very clear in his intent to respect the planet and, during his two terms, has expanded land and public waters, where it is easier to preserve natural species, by more than 220 million hectares, more than any other president in office has ever done. Coming from the producers of Blue Planet II, the spectacular BBC documentary dedicated to marine wonders, this docuseries, arriving on the streaming platform on April 13th, also promises to be exciting on a visual level. Meanwhile, Obama is training to retrace the path of great documentary myths such as Sir David Attenborough and our Piero Angela.
