Amazon eero Pro 6 review: Performance pro

7NEWS reviews the eero Pro 6. Amazon provided us with a loan device for testing purposes, however, this hasn’t affected our views on the product.

Our reviews always remain independent of the manufacturer and the first time they will see the review is at the same time you’re reading it.

Keep reading to find out what we think.

How do I get it and what will it cost?

Amazon’s fantastic eero mesh Wi-Fi system has become more powerful in Australia with the local release of the eero Pro 6.

Faster speeds and reliability are promised with a single eero Pro 6 covering up to 190 square metres, while a three-pack will give you up to 560 metres - which should be more than enough for most homes.

Amazon is offering the eero Pro 6 for $999 (three-pack), while a single device comes in at $439.

Who is it good for?Logos: Amazon eero Pro 6 review.

More and more manufacturers are creating fantastic home Wi-Fi solutions that are ‘set and forget’. Eero falls into this category with its mesh Wi-Fi.

Simply plug in any one of the eero Pro 6 pods (if you have the three-pack) and use the eero app to guide you through the setup process. That’s basically it.

Once I had the eero up and running, within around 10 minutes, I had no connectivity issues and the range was fantastic with strong signal in all areas of the house - even the backyard where the signal can be spotty.

So if you’re after a very simple and easy mesh Wi-Fi system, that is also future-proof with the latest wireless networking standards, eero Pro 6 is definitely worth a look. You can also check out the standard eero 6 as well, if you don’t need all the ‘Pro’ features. That’ll save you a little bit of cash.’

How does it work?

Eero Pro 6 appears to be aimed at those people who just want a reliable and easy-to-operate home network. There aren’t hundreds of options within the settings to play around with, and everything is laid out in an easy-to-understand way.

While I found eero Pro 6 to be a fantastic option for how my home network is set up with a media server and multiple computers and TVs that access my Synology Diskstation, it may not suit everyone - especially those who have lesser network speed needs. It’s worth looking at the standard eero 6 for these cases.

In terms of design, I love the low profile of the eero and how well it fits into the existing home decor and doesn’t look out of place like some routers can. However, something that I personally found a little irritating with the eero Pro 6 was that there are only two Ethernet ports on the back of the router.

Again, this won’t be much of an issue if you don’t have multiple devices that you like wired into the network, but for me I like to have my Samsung TV, Sonos soundbar, Synology Diskstation, and Arlo basestation security camera hub all connected directly to the router. Some other manufacturers have four Ethernet ports, as well as your Internet port - which helps with this.

However, with the eero Pro 6 case, I had to purchase a Smart Switch to connect all these devices to the eero (since there was only one port free once I’d connected the Internet). It wasn’t ideal having yet another device that I needed to power. But I feel that this won’t be much of an issue for most people who just want to ‘plug and play’ and connect wirelessly.

In terms of speed and coverage through the house, eero Pro 6 does extremely well in speed tests and how reliable it makes the network. Even in hard to reach places such as the backyard, the eero Pro 6 provided a fast and stable connection.

Another thing to mention is that eero Pro 6 comes with some pretty robust privacy and security settings, as well as parental controls. You’ll get a free month of ‘eero Secure’ which offers content filtering, ad blocking, more advanced network insights and security, a weekly activity report, as well as access to some third-party security platforms.

But after the free month, you’ll need to sign up to a monthly subscription that starts at $4.99 to access all those features. If you decide not to subscribe, your eero will still operate quite effectively.

What we thinkLogos: Amazon eero Pro 6 review.

I really like the eero range of products, and think they perform very well - especially with how simple they are to set up and use. It’s very much a set-and-forget scenario.

With the eero Pro 6, you’re getting the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard that is available on most new release flagship phones and computers. This offers up more reliable and stable connections through increased bandwidth.

Upgrading to eero mesh will provide you with years of use, especially as more and more gadgets adopt the latest in wireless technology. So if you’ve been looking around for a mesh solution that works, easy to use, and provides a stable connection - eero Pro 6 is a great option.

Only one open Ethernet port on the router is a bummer too, but if you’re all about being completely wireless this won’t bother you.

Another option is eero 6, which is also a fantastic mesh system - and cheaper. So if you don’t need gigabit internet speed (and if you’re on NBN, you most likely don’t) you can save some money.
