Payday 3: details on setting and characters, first concept art

Payday 3

Payday 3 was the focus of a special livestream created by Starbreeze for the tenth anniversary of the series: the publisher took advantage of the opportunity to reveal new details on the setting and characters of the game, as well as to publish the first concept art. Here it is:

Payday 3, the first concept art shows the characters and the setting As can be seen from the image, the new episode will be set in New York and the developers have talked about a "huge, lively representation of the city ", which suggests a rather ambitious open world structure for Payday 3, presented with a video at E3 2021.

The difference compared to Payday 2 (here the review), as well as being structural, will also be in the fact that narratively the gang has become famous, the media follow its exploits and this could lead to unexpected implications.

Payday 3 will also be set several years after the events of the second episode, at the end of which the members of the team retired to private life to enjoy the swag they had won up to that moment. Since then, "giants of software, cryptocurrencies, mass surveillance and the dark web" have arrived: all these elements will play a role in the sequel.

Finally, we come to the characters, who will be the ones we already know and not a new one generation of robbers: Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf will return to take up arms. Would you like to know more? Here's our preview of Payday 3.

Payday 3 goes to New York City and will have more “digital age” gadgets

Payday 3 has been in various stages of development for a very long time, but we’re finally starting to get a clearer picture of what the game will look like. As part of a tenth anniversary stream, the developers provided a fresh look at the lore of Payday 3, confirming that the original cast is returning and that the upcoming game will be set – at least partly – in New York City.

The new game is set some years after the end of Payday 2, as Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf are forced out of retirement by some powerful enemies. In the intervening years, the world has moved into the “digital age”, which means you’ll have some fancy new gadgets to use, as well as bigger challenges to overcome. The crew will also have to deal with increased media attention as their fame continues to grow.

Payday 3 starts in New York City, and the developers want to make the most of the scale of the setting. As game director Erik Wonnevi explains in today’s livestream, “we’re really trying to take the game into this big-scale urban environment, and immerse players into this fantasy of being at the heart of a living, breathing city.”

Details are still light, but you can see a bit more in the archived stream below, starting at the 3:02:58 mark.

The Payday 3 release date is still set for sometime in 2023. For more multiplayer games to check out in the meantime, you can follow that link.
