Age of Empires 4: two teasers show new weapons of war

Age of Empires 4

Age of Empires 4, the new chapter of the historic RTS saga, is coming next October, and Microsoft is continuing to sip its marketing campaign. After a gameplay trailer and various information releases interspersed with a recent closed beta, two short teasers have been released in the past few days showing new weapons of war.

The first weapon shown in the Age of Empires 4 teasers is the Nest of Bees Rocket, a sort of medieval rocket launcher: it is a Chinese mortar historically called 窩 蜂 (yi wo feng, literally "honeycomb"). The weapon looks like a device capable of firing multiple fire or poisoned arrows, encased in hexagonal honeycomb compartments. In game, the weapon would seem to launch only incendiary bullets.

The other weapon shown by the second teaser (visible below) is actually a defensive construction: the palisades. These are used to stop enemy advances, especially those of the cavalry, and can be positioned precisely in defense of units that suffer from the opposing charges. In the video, for example, it is shown how a troop of archers manages to resist a wave of enemy cavalry through the use of palisades. However, it seems that these structures are not particularly resistant.

Age of Empires 4 will arrive on October 24 on PC, and will also be available at launch on Xbox Game Pass. The game is the first title to continue the RTS saga that ended with Age of Empires 3 in 2005, although it is referred to as a spiritual sequel to Age of Empires 2 due to its gameplay. The game setting, as shown in the videos above, is medieval with 8 civilizations available at launch (Chinese, Mongols, Delhi Sultanate, Abbasid Dynasty, English, French, Holy Roman Empire and Kievan Rus). The division into eras follows the same classification of the second chapter, while among the novelties there are that of being able to patrol the walls with your own units and the diversification of the gameplay according to the civilization that is used.

Age of Empires 4’s long-awaited launch is almost upon as, and as the game approaches its release date, Microsoft have been ratcheting up the hype and marketing machine for it, in the form of gameplay trailer, info drops, its recent closed beta, and more. Now, they’ve released a couple more brief teasers to give us a look at some of the weapons of war we’ll be using in the strategy title.

There’s the Nest of Bees, which is a medieval rocket launcher in all but name. It fires off deadly projectiles at enemies from afar, and boasts pretty impressive rate of fire. Then there are palings, which are much more ordinary, but will serve as useful defensive fortifications against oncoming enemy cavalry units. Take a look at both of them in action in the gameplay clips below.

Age of Empires 4 will launch for PC on October 28, and like all Microsoft first party releases, it will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
