Steam Deck aims for 800p / 30 FPS

During the day, a Valve employee, as we told you in this article, talked about how Steam Deck, after years and years of testing, has finally reached a good compromise to make every game in the Steam catalog work without any problem. The minimum target set by Valve to market the new hybrid console has been set at a stable 30FPS with a resolution of 800p.

Steam Deck aims to make the Steam library something usable directly between the hands of the player, for this Valve has tried to compromise on the display trying to keep medium-high performance for the console. All this was made possible, of course, due to the small size of the machine: there is no need to have who knows what big screen to enjoy portability content, as Nintendo Switch and mobile gaming have taught us in recent years. >
As we told you in this analysis, the low resolution of the Steam Deck screen definitely favors the framerate. Some of the video games in the Steam library such as Doom Eternal, with the same hardware settings, would struggle to reach 30FPS on a normal PC. In the case of Steam Deck, however, it will be difficult for them to have problems with a 7-inch screen. Indeed, many games, especially the older ones, would easily reach 60 FPS. The emphasis, therefore, is on the fluidity of the images rather than on the graphic rendering.

Despite having an LCD screen instead of an OLED, Steam Deck should be able to support 60Hz. Furthermore, the customization possibilities that Valve itself is trying to promote should not be underestimated: users can mod the console, and who knows that in the future we will not see some particular hybrid capable of making the device even more performing. The same Gabe Newell, father of Valve, imagines a world where different companies offer their Steam Decks. Another thing to take into account: being a small PC in effect, users can change the graphics settings of each game to their liking, thus choosing whether to prioritize graphics rendering or fluidity on the screen.
