Well Pokémon GO never went anywhere, and in fact, its success has only grown over the last five years, which has led to a significant milestone.

Analyst firm Sensor Tower reports that as Pokémon GO celebrates its 5th anniversary, it has made $5 billion in revenue, averaging $1 billion a year.

That’s joined with some other stats, like the chart above that indicates 2021 represents that most significant spending the first half of a year since launch, $642 million, a 34% increase from the previous year. In all of 2020, Pok√©mon Go made $1.2 billion in revenue, a 41% increase from the previous year as pandemic lockdowns actually encouraged more play and spending, due to the changes the game made to adapt so players could play indoors and stay in place.

Finally, despite Pok√©mon’s Japanese origins and how popular GO is there, the United States is the biggest revenue driver for the game, accounting for $1.9 billion of that $5 billion over those five years.

They sell some level of benefits to players, incense, Pokeballs, XP boosters and one of its most profitable items, Raid Passes, but still, it’s just not on the level of a game like Genshin Impact, which puts all its best characters and weapons inside a mostly paid gacha system where you have to gamble hundreds of even thousands of dollars to try and land what you want. There’s loads to do in Pok√©mon GO for free, but it’s making all this money anyway, it’s deeply impressive.

There are no signs that Pokémon GO is slowing down. There are still plenty more regions of Pokémon to add, and the game is constantly being updated with new events and features. Expect only more growth, and more revenue, to come.
