Diablo 4: You can customize your character in such detail

Diablo 4

There is still no specific release date for the action role-playing game Diablo 4. But at least Blizzard Entertainment keeps providing you with new details and information. So now as part of the latest developer update. This time, the focus is primarily on the graphic aspect of the game and the general art design. The team makes one thing clear very quickly: The adaptation of the characters will be more detailed than ever before in Diablo history.

So you can not only choose whether you want to send a male or female hero into battle - there is much more detail. Among other things, you can set such aspects as hairstyle, facial hair, jewelry, tattoos and make-up or painting. Even the choice of skin tone, the color of the eyes and similar little things are available. Some of these aspects, which you can change according to your personal ideas, are class-specific, while a large part of them are available across all classes. In order to be able to offer such a sophisticated system in Diablo 4 at all, the developers had to overcome some technical obstacles. John Mueller, an art director at Blizzard Entertainment, explained in more detail:

"We have greatly improved the level of detail and the textures of skin, clothing, hair, fur, metal, even reflections in the eyes, except for small drops of sweat. There will be a completely new customization system for your characters for Diablo. From a technical point of view, that was quite difficult. After all, these adjustments had to work not only for one character, but also for hundreds of pieces of armor, various body types, dozens of personalities and, last but not least, for (first of all) five different classes. This was all new territory for our team where we have the most difficult part behind us and everything is going according to plan, I can say that it was worth the work. "

Hopefully we will see how well it all works in practice and in the finished game in the not too distant future - when Diablo 4 comes on the market for PC and consoles.

A ‘Diablo 4’ Update Is Here, Correcting A Mistake Of ‘Diablo 3’

While Diablo 4 is still a few years away, Blizzard has committed to releasing hefty quarterly updates on what is no doubt the most expansive project they’re currently working on. And the one for Q2 here? That would be a massive piece focusing on the art design of the game, encompassing both hero classes and enemies.

And I mean, whoa.

You may remember back when Diablo 3 was first being previewed, that it got roasted by players for being too bright and cheery. It became such a meme that it’s how we got Whimsyshire in the final product, and it’s very clear that this Diablo team is aiming to run the complete opposite direction.

While the final product of Diablo 3 really wasn’t overly colorful at all, Diablo 4 is going back to the Diablo 1-2 era of pure darkness, and some of the designs they’re showing off here are just wild, impressive in both the design detail, and their nightmare fuel-like appearance.

The preview is split in half between showcasing that you will be able to customize your hero class like never before, multiple faces, more detailed armor shaders, a whole bunch of options that the series hasn’t seen to date. And it all looks very good.

It’s even more impressive in video form:

But I am even more blown away by what they’re showing off in enemy design. Keep in mind Diablo is a game that mobs you with dozens of enemies at a time, so seeing this level of detail go into each one is really neat. And the designs? Uh, I hope you don’t want to sleep tonight. Just watch the videos:

I’m sorry, is that a guy, being controlled by a giant spider, sticking his fangs and legs inside him? *shivers*

So yeah, suffice to say I am very stoked about all this, and I don’t think anyone has anything bad to say about more or less any of the Diablo 4 preview stuff we’ve seen in these glimpses so far. At least on paper, this seems like everything anyone wants from a Diablo game, the main problem is just how far away this continues to be, and I’d be amazed if we saw this released before 2024, at this pace.

I just hope it turns out as good as it looks, as if it does, it will be the best thing Blizzard has produced in eons. If not? Well, I’m not sure what the future holds for the entire brand.
