The best Final Fantasy gets its own animation series

The role-playing game Final Fantasy 9 is now almost exactly 21 years old. Despite its age, it is making headlines again these days. The reason for this should come as a bit of a surprise to many fans: Square Enix has announced that the ninth Final Fantasy offshoot will have its own animation series.

According to the latest reports, Square Enix is working with the Cyber Group on this project Studios from France who already have a lot of experience with series for children. Among other things, they had their fingers in the game with "Tom Sawyer", "Mini Ninjas" and "Animalia". Square Enix wants to take advantage of this experience, because the animation series of Final Fantasy 9 should also be aimed at a rather younger target audience. The focus is primarily on children between the ages of 8 and 13.

According to current plans, production of the series will not begin until the beginning of 2022, while preparations and the conception phase are still ongoing. Among other things, it has not yet been clarified how many episodes the series should include and how long the individual episodes should be. Also with regard to the story and the basic style of the animations, no final decision has been made. However, due to its cartoon look, Final Fantasy 9 is in principle very suitable for implementation as an animation series. The game was originally released for the PS1 in 2000 - at least in Japan. The release in Europe, however, was a long time coming until February 2001. A port for the Nintendo Switch followed in 2019.
