Psychonauts 2: Release in August, new gameplay trailer

Psychonauts 2

It's almost there! The iconic action adventure Psychonauts is getting its well-deserved sequel after around 16 years. Psychonauts 2 will officially be released on August 25, 2021, on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X as well as PS4 and PS5</a> (thanks to backward compatibility). The game will also be included in Xbox Game Pass at launch. This ends a development period of around five years, which began in 2016 with a crowdfunding campaign and was marked by several postponements. In line with the announcement of the date, Double Fine has also released a new gameplay trailer, which, with its crazy level design, crazy ideas and the unmistakable psychonaut atmosphere, makes you want more.

The development team around industry legend Tim Schafer (Grim Fandango, Brütal Legend) wants to deliver a worthy sequel with Psychonauts 2 (buy now € 69.99) that builds on all the strengths of the original. Technically and playfully, the game should take a big step forward and of course Double Fine wants to tell the story on a large scale.

Psychonauts 2 may appear 16 years after the original, but the story begins only a few hours after the credits: Immediately after the events from the VR-exclusive Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, Raz and his companions reach the main office the psychonauts. There the likable young hero finds out that the espionage organization is hiding a dark secret. As in the previous game, Raz now has to travel through a wide variety of minds, explore wacky levels in an acrobatic way, fight opponents, collect upgrades and uncover secrets. You can expect idiosyncratic humor, bizarre characters, crazy level design, colorful comic graphics and a gameplay cocktail of action, platformer and adventure.

'Psychonauts 2' finally arrives on August 25, 2021

It's been 16 years since the first Psychonauts, making its proper sequel hotly anticipated. During today's Xbox/Bethesda broadcast we finally got a firm release date for this long-awaited title: August 25th. (This year, unlike a lot of other games we're seeing in this showcase.)

The original Psychonauts was a platforming adventure game from the team at Double Fine about kids with psychic powers jumping through people's minds. The sequel will once again feature Raz, newly graduated and now an intern at Psychonauts Headquarters.

The game will be released on Xbox X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Windows Cloud Gaming — and while not indicated in the trailer, it's still set to come out on non-Microsoft platforms like PlayStation and macOS, though whether it's going to land on PS5 hasn't been confirmed (probably, though).
