Oshiharai Keychain

The Oshiharai keychain is the new gadget developed by Sony designed exclusively for otaku! A special keychain that allows you to pay using your favorite characters!

Oshiharai: the keychains designed for otaku

The Oshiharai keychain is the ultimate must-have designed for lovers of souls who do not want to give up their being otaku even at the time of a payment. Of course, there are plenty of wallets inspired by the world of animation and the nerd universe, but what if you could pay directly using an object modeled after your favorite character? What if a keychain becomes your wallet?

This is the idea behind the new Oshiharai keychain, a combination of the Japanese words oshi, otaku slang for "favorite character", and harai which means "payment". The Oshiharai keychain is developed by Sony, and uses the company's FeliCa IC card technology to combine an anime keychain with a prepaid electronic money card.

Despite the built-in technology, it the thickness of the keychain is not that ephemeral as it is still three millimeters thick, about the same as a normal character keychain.

But how exactly does it work? The Oshiharai key fob is designed to work with Rakuten's Edy e-money system, which is widely accepted in Japan at retailers and vending machines and allows you to pay by simply touching a receiving pad.

The initial batch of Oshiharai keychains features only two characters from the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise, Madoka Kaname and Homura Akemi. Pre-orders were opened today May 1st. You can buy them in the Aniplex Plus online store, at a price of 2,980 yen (22.69 euros), and delivery is scheduled for June. Quantities are limited, but since Sony is billing these orders as the "first series", it's only a matter of time before the company releases Oshiharai key fobs from other franchises.

It’s not just e-money, it’s ani-money.

If you’re an anime fan, at some point your love of Japanese animation is going to have you reaching for your wallet. You could be treating yourself to something splashy, like a limited-edition figure or Blu-ray box set, or maybe it’s just a fun little impulse buy, like a keychain of your favorite character.

But what if that keychain itself was your wallet?

That’s the idea behind the new Oshiharai Keyholder, which combines the Japanese words oshi, otaku slang for “favorite character,” and harai/”payment.” Developed by Sony, the Oshiharai Keyholder uses the company’s FeliCa IC card technology to combine an anime keychain with a prepaid e-money card.

Despite the embedded technology, the Oshiharai Keyholder is still just three millimeters (1.12 inches) thick, roughly the same as a normal character keychain.

The keychain works with Rakuten’s Edy e-money system, which is widely accepted in Japan at retailers and vending machines and allows you to pay simply by tapping a receptor pad.
