Intel NUC 11, technical specifications revealed

Intel NUC 11

FanlessTech colleagues have published the technical specifications of the new Intel NUC 11 Essential, known by the codename Atlas Canyon, which will use low-power Jasper Lake processors built on the 10nm node. Jasper Lake is equipped with a Tremont core and operates with a TDP between 6 and 10 W, so it does not require any intrusive system for its cooling. The NUC 11 Essential will be available with three different options regarding the CPU. The Pentium Silver J6005 and Celeron J5105 are quad-core chips, while the Celeron J4505 is dual-core only, but none of them take advantage of Hyper-Threading technology.

Select models will come with 64GB of eMMC memory, but the NUC 11 Essential offers a single M.2 2280 slot for housing both NVMe and SATA drives. As FanlessTech noted, this is the first time that an entry-level NUC has come with an M.2 slot, as previous models only offered the space to house a 2.5-inch drive. This helps reduce the size of the device, which is now 135x115x36mm.

The NUC 11 Essential offers an HDMI 2.0b port and DisplayPort 1.4 video output. Both connectors support HDCP 2.2 and 2160p resolution, so you can connect up to two 4K displays. You will still be limited by Jasper Lake's integrated Intel UHD GPU which, while not suitable for gaming, is more than enough to support movie viewing and ensure adequate performance for typical workloads for personal productivity.

There are two 3.5mm audio jacks on the front. In addition, NUC 11 Essential supports 7.1 audio via the HDMI port. As for the rest of the available ports, we find two front USB 3.1, two rear USB 3.1, as well as two other USB 2.0. The NUC ships with a 65W 19V DC power supply.

Intel will ship the NUC 11 Essential with a three year warranty. At the moment, the price has not yet been mentioned, while according to FanlessTech the device will not be available for purchase until the first quarter of next year.

Intel's NUC 11 Essential Desktop PC Leaks

Back in January, Intel launched its 10nm Jasper Lake platform using the Tremont architecture. Now a new NUC model has leaked, codenamed 'Atlas Canyon,' which will take advantage of three Jasper Lake chips in a tiny desktop form factor.

As FanlessTech reports, a slide for the new NUC 11 Essential has leaked, offering a full breakdown of the miniature PC's specification. It measures just 135-by-115-by-36mm, meaning there's no space for a 2.5-inch hard drive inside. Storage is restricted to a PCIe x4 NVMe or SATA M.2 SSD, which is no bad thing, but Intel will also offer some models with 64GB of eMMC storage included.

The NUC 11 Essential will be available as a pre-configured mini pc, a barebones kit, or just the board. Processor options include a four-core Pentium Silver J6005 (NUC11ATKPE), four-core Celeron J5105 (NUC11ATKC4), and a two-core Celeron J4505 (NUC11ATKC2), with all three chips clocked at 2GHz and using Intel UHD Graphics. Dual-channel DDR4-2933 SODIMMs are supported, but only up to 16GB can be configured.

In terms of connectivity, there's an Ethernet port, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, two USB 3.1 ports on the front and two on the back, with a further two USB 2.0 ports on the back. 7.1 audio is supported via HDMI, and there's 3.5mm headphone and microphone jacks on the front. As well as a HDMI 2.0b port, Intel included a DisplayPort 1.4 port, and this tiny PC can support two 4K displays. Cooling is active, but unlikely to be noisy for these processors.

If this sounds like your perfect little PC, be prepared to wait. Intel apparently isn't planning to launch the NUC 11 Essential until the first quarter of 2022, and with the chip shortages the world currently faces, there's no guarantee Intel will be able to launch on schedule.
