After attracting the attention of Hermen Hulst in May of last year with stunning celebratory fan art on the PlayStation series, the Twitter user known as BT_BlackThunder takes Cory Barlog by surprise with the fake announcement of the first God of War 2 gameplay video for PS5.April fool orchestrated on social media invites all fans of the God of War epic to get ready because "the storm of Ragnarok is coming! Watch the World Premiere of the next PS5 exclusive and follow the video Deep Dive with Cory Barlog scheduled for tonight ".
To make his message more credible, the Twitter user has crafted an unlikely God of War 2 artwork and twisted the look of his social account to use the logo of the Californian subsidiary of PlayStation Studios, but with the name "SIE Santa Monica is Fishing" which makes clear the intent of the operation.
In jokingly responding to the "provocation" by BT_BlackThunder, the director of God of War expressed with a meme of the actor James Franco all his disbelief at the announcement made by the fan of the Kratos series. God of War 2: Everything we know so far about Ragnarok on PS5
© Provided by GamesRadar nullGod of War 2, or God of War: Ragnarok to give its official title, might have been confirmed as a 2021 release during September 2020's PS5 showcase, but it's still got plenty of secrets to share. We know that it's in production at Sony's Santa Monica studio, and that it will continue to take inspiration from Norse mythology, but its creators are keeping everything else under wraps for now.
The game's creative director, Cory Barlog, has hinted that we're some way off from seeing the finished game with a tweet.
Let's not forget that the pandemic has impacted game development for plenty of big studios, so it's no surprise that Sony is keeping the release window vague for now. Besides, it needs to save a big awesome trailer for its E3 showcase right?
Despite the lack of official news there are plenty of hints as to what we can expect in the sequel, especially given the ending of God of War. Need a refresher? Read on for everything we expect to see, and the story threads we want to follow, in God of War: Ragnarok.
What the games are saying***Warning, major spoilers lie ahead***
Seriously, spoilers. At the end of 2018's God of War Kratos and Atreus discover Faye, AKA Mrs Kratos, was actually a giant called Laufey, making Atreus half god and half-giant, and with another name: Loki. Yes, that Loki, the one from Norse mythology who is often portrayed as a trickster, sometimes with shapeshifting abilities. God of War played pretty fast and loose with Norse mythology but could offer some hints as to what's to come.
Once that big revelation is out of the way, we're told Fimbulwinter is coming. If you skipped your Norse mythology class – shame on you – then know that this is a three year 'great winter' that proceeds Ragnarok, the Norse apocalypse.
Post credits, there's a second ending when you return home and, there, Thor appears 'several years later'. It's a brief tease, ending after Kratos asks him what he wants. It could be that Thor wants revenge for that whole Kratos 'killing his sons' thing, or, he might want his help stopping Ragnarok.
What we’re sayingAt times God of War felt like a very personal project about fatherhood, and it feels very likely that a sequel would continue to explore that dynamic between Kratos and Atreus, even as both struggle to come to terms with his newfound potential. How will Kratos, so used to being the powerful protector, react now that his son could potentially be even more powerful? Could the conflict this raises between father and son somehow bring about the Ragnarok, referenced in God of War and that PS4 theme? Or will the two find a way to work together, combining their might to battle any threats that come their way?
Whatever happens, we can be certain that there will be huge new enemies to fight, new combat techniques to master, and a huge, beating dad heart at the center of it all. We can't bloody wait.
