10 years of Amazon.co.uk: what we buy, what we look for
What was the first product you ever bought on Amazon.co.uk? This is Axel Scheffler's children's book “The Gruffalo”. It was November 23, 2010 and in a few days it will be time to celebrate this first decade of purchases in one of the most particular moments of Amazon itself: it will be a day suspended between the pitfalls of the pandemic and the opportunities of Black Friday, but it will also be a moment to take stock of what Amazon has represented in this decade and how Italians have changed in parallel with Amazon itself.

10 years of Amazon.it: it will be November 23, 2020

So Amazon itself tells about itself and its relationship with Italians:

The categories at the top of the top 10 of the most purchased products on Amazon.it are books, consumer electronics and the home, the undisputed protagonists of purchases by Italians during all editions of Black Friday. The books rank at the top of the most popular product categories, with children's and youth texts proving to be the absolute bestselling products. In the electronics category, wireless, bluetooth and computer accessories but also components, in particular computer memory cards, have gained great popularity in this decade. The home category occupies three central positions in the ranking of the most popular categories, with accessories, home decor and lighting taking the lead. Next, we find the beauty and personal care products category.

In recent months, the most sought-after products are the Kindle Paperwhite reader (129.9 euros), toothbrushes, dishwasher tablets and Fire TV Sticks: a product differentiation that has expanded and which in recent months has been loaded with additional values due to the need to move as little as possible from one's home.

The Prime Now service has been active for 5 years, while for 7 years now Black Friday has become an established habit that, translated from marketing to consumer habits, has expanded the Christmas season by opening up more opportunities on online purchases. In this year (to say the least "extraordinary", in the sense of "out of the ordinary"), Black Friday experienced an early phase, with discounts ending on November 19th. Then the 10 candles will go out, so it will be time for the last gifts: Christmas ones, those of Black Friday proper.
